If home can be the most dangerous place for someone experiencing domestic violence, then the workplace can, and should become a trusted shelter.

AXA Safe Spaces is an open-to-all training programme empowering anyone to take meaningful action against domestic and sexual violence and to help create workplaces that are safe, informed, and compassionate. Anyone can experience domestic or sexual violence, and for many, the workplace may be one of the few places where they can feel secure and supported. Through engaging story dramatisations, first-hand insights from experts, and practical guidance on how to Recognise, Respond, and Refer, the initiative helps individuals and organisations collectively improve outcomes for victim-survivors. According to UN Women, one in three women will experience violence at least once in her lifetime, and most of these women are employed. We have a collective responsibility, and a real opportunity, to make the workplace a safe space. Domestic and sexual violence are universal issues, often hidden, misunderstood, and difficult to discuss. Survivors face stigma, silence, and a lack of safe places to disclose their experiences. As a global insurer with millions of employees and customers worldwide, AXA recognised a responsibility to act. The challenge was to create a training and awareness programme that could help people, across cultures and languages, to understand, identify, and respond appropriately to domestic and sexual abuse, both within and beyond the workplace. But on such a personal and emotionally charged subject, facts alone wouldn’t be enough, the project needed empathy, storytelling, and humanity.
