The Great British Phone Switch

Electric Robin

Client: Tesco Mobile, EssenceMediacom and Channel 4

This five-part social experiment series, commissioned by Tesco Mobile and Channel 4, explores the generational divide in digital life by challenging parents and tweens to swap devices for 48 hours. Guided by presenter and therapist Anna Williamson and child psychologist Dr Martha, families step into each other’s online worlds, navigating unfamiliar apps, habits, and pressures. The experience, grounded in weeks of screen-time data, reveals humour, drama, and profound insights into smartphone use and online safety.

Experts monitor activity in a controlled setting, introducing challenges on AI, remote work, multi-screening, content creation, cyberbullying, and digital slang—each designed to spark reflection and conversation. Every episode culminates in a co-authored parent-child pledge to improve device habits, shared online to inspire viewers. The production demanded meticulous planning to authentically replicate digital routines for multiple families simultaneously. An automated tracking system and scheduled engagement prompts ensured seamless execution, supported by rigorous stress-testing and stakeholder collaboration. The result: an entertaining, thought-provoking series that positions Tesco Mobile as a trusted resource for families navigating teens’ transition into adulthood—emphasising that managing phone anxieties isn’t about removing devices, but engaging with the digital world together.
